Types of Carpet

There are many different types of carpets to choose from today, defined by characteristics like pile style, fiber type, and performance characteristics. Our team will walk you through which options are most suitable for homes with young children or pets, along with what styles will help disguise vacuum marks, stains, and pet fur. There are five main types: level loop, patterned, textured, frieze, and plush.

Loop – Carpet where the yarn is looped and uncut on the surface, with low or high pile levels. Loop Carpet is strong and able to hide soil easily. Its shading and rich color make it resistant to patterns in heavy traffic areas.

Pattern – Combination of high-cut tufts and lower uncut loops allows the carpet to have a variety of patterns. Patterned Carpet is tough and durable while adding a dimension of texture that can hide traffic patterns in high activity rooms.

Frieze – Frieze, or ‘twists’ utilizes high twisted yarn to give the carpet a contemporary look. They are excellent at hiding traffic patterns. Common Frieze-style rugs include Shags and Cables.

Plush – With a high-density construction these rugs are ultra-soft like velvet. These rugs are more formal thanks to their dense deep pile cut and are prone to revealing footprints and vacuum marks. Using non-shiny, or delustred, yarn can help reduce the appearance of these marks.

Texture – Using kinked or curled yarn, this type has low light reflectance. So it shows fewer footprints and vacuum marks than any other cut pile construction which is why they have earned the nicknames “trackless” and “footprint-free”.

Types of Carpet Fibers

There are a variety of synthetic carpet fibers available, including nylon, wool, olefin, and triexta. Nylon is one of the strongest options available, and nylon carpets are extremely wear-resistant. Other synthetics are also durable and soft. We also have natural fibers like wool, which are insulating, crush-resistant, and eco-friendly. The quality of your carpet fibers and the type you choose will help determine how your new floor will perform over the years.

Pet-Friendly Carpet

We have stain-resistant carpets that can handle your favorite furry family members. Pet-friendly carpets also tend to have odor-resistant fibers that wick moisture and are easy to clean. Our options also include carpet colors and patterns that will hide pet fur between cleanings. You’ll even find waterproof carpets, which have an industrial plastic backing that stops pet urine and spills from reaching the carpet pad and subfloor, where they can cause permanent damage.

Where Can Carpet Be Installed?

Carpets are ideal for essentially anywhere in your home except the kitchen and bathroom. Modern carpets are made with performance and quality in mind, making them more durable and easier to care for than ever. We also have commercial carpets for businesses, including durable low-pile carpet options. Additionally, we have high-traffic carpet and carpet remnants for spaces like closets, stairs, and hallways.
